2022 SCSO Young Performers Scholarship Competition Scholarship Winners

Scholarship and Grand Prize Winner TJ Stang, Piano

TJ Stang is a fifteen-year-old homeschooler who loves playing the piano.  He began playing at age six and is currently studying with Dr. Paul Wirth.  TJ is also a member of his church’s worship team and plays regularly.  He volunteers his time and piano skills to play for area nursing homes.  TJ plans to continue studying piano in college and hopes to someday teach.

Scholarship Winner Christopher Baugh, Piano

Chris Baugh is a student at St Cloud State University, where he studies piano under Dr. Shannon Sadler. He began taking piano lessons when he was eight years old and he studied with Dr. Paul Wirth until he graduated from high school in 2019. When not practicing piano, he is probably drinking coffee and playing with his cats.

Scholarship Winner Elizabeth Ernst, Cello

Elizabeth Ernst is a seventeen-year-old junior at Apollo High School. She has been studying the cello with Steve Eckblad for ten years and plays the violin in the Apollo Symphony Orchestra directed by Aurora MacMillan. She also sings in the Youth Chorale of Central Minnesota, plays tennis and softball, and is a member of the Apollo National Honor Society. Elizabeth plans on continuing cello in her free time after high school, while pursuing Chinese language studies in college.

Kallen Hanzsek-Brill

Kallen Hanzsek-Brill is 16 years old and a junior at St. Cloud Apollo High School. He has been studying the oboe under Brendon Bushman for the last two years and playing the oboe in the Symphonic Band and the saxophone in the Jazz Band at Apollo under the direction of George Zahn. Kallen is captain of the boys’ swim team, a member of the cross country team, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and is involved in community service through the Young People’s Collective.  He plans on continued study with the oboe throughout high school and college.

Thomas Stang is a 14-year-old homeschooler.  He began taking piano lessons at the age of 6.  At the age of 9, he began studying with Dr. Paul Wirth and currently studies with Dr. Chris Weldon.  He enjoys fishing, skiing, mechanical engineering, and wood working.  He plans to attend college and earn a degree in music studies.

Carter Scheele studies viola with David Arnott and will be graduating from Saint John’s University this May. Carter began his musical experience as a violin student of Kara Mather, and within a few years began dabbling with the viola. Carter later studied violin and viola with Steve Eckblad, and at age seventeen became a member of the Saint Cloud Symphony Orchestra. Carter plays with the Amadeus Chamber Symphony and various music ensembles in college. Aside from playing the viola, Carter is an avid Nordic skier during the winter and is employed as a wildland firefighter in the western U.S. during the summer. During his free time, he treasures any opportunity to cook, ride his bike, or climb a tree.

Eleanor Melton is graduating in May 2021 from the University of Minnesota Morris with her B.A. in music performance. She began taking piano lessons at age five and studied under Dr. Ann DuHamel during her undergraduate career. After graduating she plans to teach piano in the Red Wing area, where she currently lives with her husband. Outside of music, her interests include literature, languages, and gardening.
